Luisa D’Urso obtained the degree in Chemical Engineering at University of Palermo (1998) with the thesis: “Study of pitting phenomena on Al, Ti, and their alloys”, awarded a grant by Becromal s.p.a., Milan. In 2003 obtained the PhD in Material Science at University of Catania with the thesis: Nanostructured thin films of Ag nanoparticles in insulators. During the PhD was involved in the research project: Direct Wafer Bonding as manufacturing process of a high quality bond InP-Si to employ in design and realization of a bottom cell in multijunction solar cells – developed at California Institute of Technology (CalTech), Pasadena (USA) with prof. H. Atwater. In the period 2003-2008 was engaged in research fellows at University of Catania with the project: Characterization of nanostructured thin films. She is author of 40 papers, published on international journals in the field of synthesis of nanomaterials in liquid and solid state, spectroscopy, ion-matter interaction, and thin films deposition. She is Co-Organizer of XX National Congress of the group of Raman Spectroscopy and non-linear effects. Catania, 27-29 Jun 2007.
Current position: Assistant Professor at University of Catania – Department of Chemical Sciences (CHIM/02).
Teaching courses: Physical Chemistry of materials, Laboratory of Physical Chemistry II, Electrochemistry, Organic nanostructures.
Tutorial activity: co-rapporteur and advisor for experimental thesis for the BSc in Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry, co-rapporteur for doctoral thesis in Chemistry and Material Science.
Scientific Research Activity
-Synthesis and deposition of nanostructured thin films and their modification by physical approaches (thermal, laser radiation, ionic and electronic processes). Characterization by vibrational and electronic spectroscopy (Raman spectroscopy, infrared absorption, HR photoelectron spectroscopy) and atomic force microscopy
-Experimental investigations of mass and kinetic energy distribution in clusters beams at low energy by time of flight mass spectrometry (MS-TOF)
- Direct Wafer Bonding as method to create high quality semiconductor hetero-junctions to be used in the design of multi-junction solar cells.
- Synthesis in hot plasma (laser ablation and arc discharge in liquid) of metal nanostructures and carbon based materials (1D and 2D architectures) – Modification of physical and chemical properties of nanomaterials by intermolecular interactions of solute molecules dispersed in liquid (water in most cases of biological relevance). Surface and interface analysis (surface enhanced spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy)
